Free dog and cat daily calorie calculator
Bag charts assume an average pet. This free calculator uses the common veterinary nutrition approach: resting energy requirement (RER), then a maintenance factor for puppies, kittens, neutered adults, seniors, and activity.
How the formula works
- Convert weight to kilograms.
- RER = 70 × (kg)0.75.
- Daily target ≈ RER × life-stage factor (for example ~1.6 for a typical neutered adult dog, ~1.2 for a neutered adult cat).
- Optional: divide by kcal per cup on your bag for an approximate cups-per-day figure.

Pet calorie FAQ
How do you calculate dog or cat daily calories?
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75, then multiply by a maintenance factor for life stage and neuter status.
Is this medically exact?
No. It is a planning estimate. Needs can vary by 20–50%. Use body condition and veterinary advice as the final check.
Can I get cups per day?
Yes — enter kcal per cup from the food label after you calculate.
What about weight loss?
Choose the weight-management stage for a lower starting factor. Obese pets should follow a plan with a veterinarian — do not crash-diet.
